Bradford’s only cooperatively-run cafe, workspace, and community hub has secured its future into 2023 with the help of the local community!
We wanted to say a huge thank you to the communities of Bradford and beyond for all the support we received during our crowdfunder campaign. Your support along with match funding from the Power to Change Community Business Crowdmatch Fund and The National Emergencies Trust has allowed us to raise a total of £30,281 with 233 supporters in 28 days!
Since August 2018, our co-op of Bradford-based entrepreneurs and businesses have been running Bread + Roses. Transforming the former Forks Cafe and grade-two listed building, 14 North Parade, into a home for co-working, vegan and vegetarian food, and nurturing the space to become a popular community hub. Guided by a commitment to building a stronger, united and more resilient community, our mission is to create a positive and supportive space for the people of Bradford to come together. Sadly, our business came into a time of crisis but the people of Bradford and beyond really gave back and pulled together to keep us going.
The success of this campaign will keep us open into 2023, safeguarding the jobs of 10 employees, allowed us to give our staff a pay rise in response to the cost of living crisis and has also given us the time to look into ways we can restructure our organisation for a more sustainable future.
Despite the challenges, the team has bounced back and we are continuing to provide a varied community wellbeing programme of workshops and events, our cafe and co-working spaces are as busy as ever, and we currently have two private and fully furnished offices are currently available to rent, equipped with superfast internet and professional video conferencing facilities.
We’re encouraging everyone to book flexible co-working and private meeting rooms in advance due to reaching capacity recently and as always we have our community kitchen for hire and well as our print and riso facilities available for use!
Every pledge, like and share has helped in the support our campaign and we’d like to thank our audiences again for showing us what our vibrant communities can achieve. We also want to acknowledge all the hard work our team has put into saving the organisation, we’re sure everyone would agree that in spaces like B+R, the people really make the place so make sure to continue to show your support to our staff by popping by and saying hello soon.
“For me it is absolutely one of Bradford’s cultural gems and we need it, being in the heart of Bradford City Centre it represents all that is good about Bradford. It represents community, our diversity and it represents the places where from small conversations big campaigns then happen.
Bradford is built on radicalism, and its future is radical, its future is bold and this is what Bread + Roses stands for. A sense of community and a place where people can understand what their power is as an individual, as part of a neighbourhood, as part of a wider district and that is really important. People understand that as a collective, people can make a difference. That’s why Bread formed, that’s what coops are about and that’s what Bradford District is about.” – Richard Dunbar, (Local Creative Producer and Podcaster)
